When the AC Stops: A Safe Plan for Your Next Call
When cooling stops, the first decision is whether there is an immediate hazard. You do not need to find the failed part before asking for help, and a service request should never delay getting people out of danger.
Deal with warning signs first
If you suspect a gas leak, leave the area. Do not operate switches, use a phone in the affected area or investigate the equipment. From a safe place, call 911 and your gas utility. Enbridge Gas North Carolina explains the actions to take and avoid.
If a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds, move outside and call 911. CPSC also directs people who suspect CO poisoning to get fresh air immediately and call 911. Do not wait for an HVAC appointment to investigate a possible emergency.
For a routine cooling failure, make a brief note
Record when you first noticed the problem. Does the thermostat display anything? Do you hear equipment operating from your normal position? Is the whole house affected? These are observations, not a diagnosis. You do not need to force the system through repeated starts to collect them.
Review ordinary thermostat settings according to the operating instructions. If the filter can be reached through its normal user access, note its condition. Leave panels, internal wiring, refrigerant components and moving parts alone. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker.
If the house is becoming uncomfortable, make arrangements for a suitable place to stay while you seek service. Do not keep testing equipment to avoid making that practical decision.
Explain the request clearly
Give the service company your location, the symptoms, when they started and any visible water or damage. Tell them if someone previously worked on the system, without assuming the earlier work caused the current problem.
M&A accepts weekday service inquiries for Winston-Salem and the Triad. Hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., excluding holidays; M&A does not offer emergency or after-hours dispatch. An online request does not confirm an appointment.
