Equipment selection

Build a Comparison Sheet Before Choosing Central AC

Published · 2 min read

Two central AC proposals can be difficult to compare when each describes the project differently. Before choosing equipment, create one comparison sheet and ask each contractor to explain the same points. An unanswered question belongs on the sheet just as much as a listed feature.

Start with the home, not a unit size

List the comfort concerns you want addressed and the areas the system serves. Include rooms that feel different and any relevant changes to the house. Ask how the proposed capacity was selected.

ENERGY STAR recommends sizing from the home's actual characteristics, evaluating airflow and checking the installed refrigerant charge. A quick square-footage rule or the size of the old unit is not a complete explanation of the proposed design.

Give every proposal the same headings

Use these headings for your comparison: equipment, distribution, controls, associated work, exclusions and completion. Under equipment, request exact indoor and outdoor model numbers and confirmation that the proposed combination is suitable.

Under distribution, ask what the contractor has determined about the existing ducts and airflow. Under controls, identify what is included and how it works with the equipment. Ask for an explanation of unfamiliar terms instead of treating a longer feature list as automatically better.

For associated work, clarify the electrical, drainage, access and removal tasks included in the proposal. Record an exclusion explicitly; an empty space should not be interpreted as included work.

Know what happens at completion

Ask what operating instructions and installation records you will receive. Clarify any registration responsibility and read the actual equipment and labor warranty terms. Do not assume two proposals offer the same coverage because their headings look similar.

Finally, compare the full defined projects, including the questions still outstanding. A model name alone does not describe the work at your property.

Discuss central cooling options with M&A for a Winston-Salem or Triad home. Your comparison sheet can keep the conversation focused on the installation you need rather than an isolated equipment label.
