An HVAC Problem After Hours: Choose the Right Next Step

Published · 2 min read

When heating or cooling stops after business hours, decide first whether there is an immediate danger. A contractor request form is not a substitute for emergency assistance, and submitting one does not confirm that a technician is on the way.

Leave an immediate hazard

For fire, smoke, or immediate danger, move to safety and call 911. If a carbon-monoxide alarm sounds or you suspect CO poisoning, get everyone outside to fresh air and call 911. CPSC's carbon-monoxide guidance explains the need for immediate action.

If you smell gas or suspect a leak, leave immediately. Avoid switches, phones, flames, and other possible ignition sources in the affected area. From a safe place, call 911 and your gas utility. Enbridge Gas North Carolina provides gas-leak instructions. Do not investigate the leak or try to operate gas valves.

Check the service hours before relying on a request

M&A schedules Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., and is closed weekends and holidays. We do not offer emergency or after-hours response. Our website forms are for service requests, not emergency dispatch or confirmed appointments.

If a repair cannot wait for those hours, contact a provider that offers the availability you need. If the space becomes unsafe, move to a suitable location and seek appropriate help. Do not bypass equipment protections or keep resetting a fault while waiting.

Prepare for a weekday assessment

For a concern that can safely wait, record the symptom, when it began, the affected rooms, and any displayed messages. Have equipment information and earlier service records ready. Avoid opening panels or attempting internal electrical, gas, or refrigerant work.

Send M&A a non-emergency service request for a Winston-Salem or Triad property. Include the best contact information and a clear description so we can review the request during business hours and confirm the next step.
