AC Is Running but the House Is Warm: What to Record

Published · 2 min read

The thermostat shows cooling, you can hear equipment running, and the room still feels warm. That describes a symptom, but it does not tell you which part needs repair. A few careful observations can make a service request much more specific.

Confirm what you are observing

Check the thermostat's selected mode, setting, and displayed temperature. Note whether the problem affects the whole house or particular rooms. Record when you first noticed it and whether cooling changes at different times of day.

From normal occupied areas, notice whether air is reaching the registers. Keep furniture and stored items clear of supply and return openings. Check an accessible filter only as the equipment instructions allow. ENERGY STAR includes filter care, airflow, and controls in its maintenance guidance.

Describe changes without opening equipment

Tell the technician about visible water, ice seen without removing a cover, new sounds, or repeated shutdowns. If there is visible ice, avoid trying to remove it with tools or heat. Seek equipment-specific instructions before continuing operation.

Do not open electrical compartments, reach near moving parts, repeatedly reset a tripping breaker, or add refrigerant. Poor cooling does not by itself prove a refrigerant shortage. A diagnosis needs more evidence than the temperature of air felt by hand.

Bring the house into the conversation

Mention a recent renovation, a newly occupied room, or a change in operating schedule. ENERGY STAR's installation guidance treats airflow and sizing as system considerations; equipment and the space it serves need to be assessed together.

If smoke, a gas odor, or another immediate hazard is present, move to safety and seek emergency assistance instead of continuing checks.
