Ductless planning

Will a Mini-Split Fit the Way You Use This Room?

Published · 2 min read

Start a mini-split discussion with a sketch of the space. Mark the rooms you want to condition, doors that usually stay closed, and the areas already served by heating or cooling. The layout is more useful than choosing an indoor unit from a photograph.

Define the space and its use

Explain whether it is a daily office, a guest room, an addition, or another occupied area. Note the hours it is used and what currently makes it uncomfortable. Tell the assessor about insulation or air-leakage concerns you have already observed.

ENERGY STAR identifies ductless systems as an option where ducts are absent or difficult to extend. A single indoor head should not be assumed to deliver the same conditions to every nearby enclosed room. Discuss each intended area and the load assessment needed for it.

Walk through the installation route

Ask where the indoor and outdoor equipment would go, how service access would be maintained, and where piping, wiring, and condensate drainage would run. Discuss visible line coverings and wall penetrations. Confirm which electrical work and finish work are included in the proposal.

If usable ducts already serve the space, ask whether a ducted option also deserves evaluation. The comparison should describe the full installation rather than only an equipment purchase.

Try the control discussion before deciding

Ask how you would adjust temperatures, set schedules, and care for accessible filters. If you want app control or a different thermostat, verify compatibility with the proposed models. PNNL explains that some communicating equipment needs its intended controls to retain full functionality.
